Oracular Skullptures #1
Shiny painted skullptures coming from otherworldly realms.
Poised between art and design, sacred and profane, Oracular Skullptures is the first series of real animal skulls coated with a special blend of pastel colors and enriched with gold details.
The glossy surface is reminiscent of the spray-painting of a car giving the skulls a “toyish” look; at the same time, these “delightfully macabre” and “wonderfully grotesque” natural objects look like magical creatures, astral beings from outer space or other worlds.
Each skull is an oracle: if questioned, it will answer; if respected, it will bring good fortune, wealth, knowledge, love or wisdom. The animal skull has here abdicated its natural function in favor of a cultural one, thanks to artistic intervention.
This first series was part of my solo debut exhibition Where is my sacred? (2019) at the Fondazione Pastificio Cerere in Rome.
